What’s Causing Your Dark Spots?

A pigment imbalance triggered by hormones, heat, and sun exposure.

Melasma is a chronic skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches or spots, often on the face. These patches are typically brown or grayish-brown and can appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, or upper lip. It is more common in women, particularly during pregnancy, which is sometimes referred to as the "mask of pregnancy." However, melasma can also occur in people who aren't pregnant.

The exact cause of melasma isn't fully understood, but it is thought to be related to hormonal changes (e.g., during pregnancy or while using birth control), sun exposure, and genetics. The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun stimulate melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment), which can lead to the overproduction of melanin and result in dark patches.

It’s commonly triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes (like pregnancy or birth control), heat, and even inflammation. While it’s not harmful, it can be frustratingly stubborn.

Because melasma is deeply rooted in the skin, over-the-counter creams aren’t enough. A strategic, medical-grade approach is needed to safely reduce pigmentation and prevent it from returning—and that’s exactly what we offer.
